Sleek, Simple and Modern White Kitchen

Contemporary white units by UK's Funktional Kitchens and stark marble countertops create a bright and airy feel in this modern kitchen. The French doors and sky lights bring loads of natural light into the space keeping energy costs low. The retro diner barstool is a perfect addition to the kitchen island.

A sleek ice-blue glass splashback and stainless steel appliances add to the crisp modern look. The open glass shelves are a brilliant contrast to the solid glossy cabinets. The sink however, is not in the best position - I would move it to the kitchen island. Would you change anything?

Interior Design Color Trends for 2010 - Purple

It's royal, healing and eccentric. You may either love it or hate it. But, get ready purple is making a comeback and is a big color trend for 2010.

Trend setting interior designers have already added shades of purple back into their color schemes. New York-based designer, Amanda Nisbet created a dramatic bedroom in purple, brown and white. Loving the Louis XV chair and foot stool in white with brown and white contemporary upholstery! And the throw pillow pulls the color scheme together perfectly.

The master of color, Jamie Drake designs a stunning Manhattan bedroom in magenta, fuchsia and purple. Creating a focal point, Drake adds a dramatic custom button-tufted headboard wall in chenille from Cowton & Tout called Brasilia Lilas. The floral brocade bedspread is also from Cowtan & Tout.

Designer Phillip Sides creates a soothing bathroom in the North Carolina home by using white subway tiles and painting the walls a soft lavendar - Classic Lilac (1002-5C) by Valspar. The cafe curtains in Manuel Canovas Suzon by Cowtan & Tout are hung mid-window to allow for natural light while still giving needed privacy.

Charleston South Carolina's Angie Hranowsky designed this ecclectic dining room with striking walls in plum. It work beautifully with the white accents - table, chandelier and table lamp and hints of blue - vases.

New York-based designer, Christopher Maya combines shades of purple and pink to create an exquisite formal foyer and vestibule at this year's Kips Bay Show House.

Maya beautifully fuses new and old decor elements throughout the space making it a perfect place to entertain guest or read alone by the fireplace.

As we head into 2010 you will see more textile and furniture designers launching lines with shades of purple, but here are some trend-setters available today.

Contemporary San Francisco Kitchen

before
Design firm LQ Living Design of Mill Valley, California, took this rather mundane San Francisco kitchen and transformed it into a sleek contemporary space that is as beautiful as it is functional.

The island topped with Zodiac Bianco Carrera marble was turned so that the homeowners could move throughout the space and entertain guests with ease. The custom cabinetry in a dark Wenge wood is dramatic. It contrasts nicely with the light countertops - the perimeter is in CeasarStone Pebble. I particularly like the trio of Satin Nickel Mini Pendant with Clear Glass and Opal Inner above the island.

Crisp edged glass tile by Interstyle in Stone Arch makes for a stunning back splash and adds hints of soft gray and green to the neutral color scheme.

The contemporary stools are Aria Bar Stools from Advanced Interior Designs. This artistic bar stool can swivel a full 360 degrees and has a gas lift mechanism so you can adjust your designed height from 21.5" to 29". Loving it!

The gorgeous flooring is Cumaru wood from Golden State Flooring and it extends up a new staircase. The new railing also visually opens up the space. The spindles are black brushed steel rubbed and powder coated to look like stainless steel for a fraction of the cost. Gotta love that.

Top Ten Ideas for Decorating Your Apartment Rental

Anyone who has rented an apartment desires to feel comfortable, no matter how large or small the space. Decorating an apartment can be difficult as there is often little to work with and only so much change allowed. Every apartment complex is different. Some complexes resemble the styles of Pleasanton apartments in California, with varying sizes, yet functional and luxurious. Others reflect the high class busy lifestyle of Manhattan apartments, often in a one-room loft layout. Whatever the location or floor plan, remember these top ten ideas for making the best out of your space and making it your own.

1. Use multi-functional furniture – For small spaces, a futon sofa bed will give your guests a place to sit and a place for you to sleep at night all in one piece of furniture.

2. Purchase storage type furniture – Beds, couches, and loveseats are available with extra storage options. Storing away miscellaneous items can de-clutter a space and make it appear larger.

3. Wall hangings – Most rentals do not allow paint on the walls. Unique wall hangings can add the expression you are looking for without damaging the walls. Large panels with fabric in your color of choice will work for any wall.

4. Minimal window coverings – Many apartments lack windows as they are connected to other units in the building. Do not cover the windows with excess fabric or curtains. This will block any natural light coming in. Practice minimalism on the windows.

5. Floor lamps – Don’t underestimate the power of adequate lighting. Invest in a few floor lamps and bring your apartment to life. All of your decorating will be evident in a well-lighted room.

6. Add warmth with plants – Studio and loft apartments can be a little “drab” and cold. Add warmth to a space with a few green plants. Plants also help to clean up the air in your apartment, which can be beneficial for apartments in pollution-filled cities.

7. Use room dividers for open spaces – One room apartments can be segmented into separate areas through the use of room dividers, folding screens, or curtains suspended from the ceiling.

8. Pay attention to the small details – Limited budgets mean limited decorating. Small touches such as adding new light switch covers or cabinet hardware can make a big difference without stressing your pocketbook. Make sure to keep those covers and hardware because you will have to replace them when you leave.

9. Create one focal point for each room – Every room should have at least one item that centers the room and makes everything around it pale in comparison. This could be a fireplace, a painting, a statue, or even a large piece of furniture.

10. Mirrors – Use mirrors to reflect light and create the look of a bigger space. Hanging mirrors on the wall or balancing them on the floor against a focal wall can add elegance and style to any room.

The most important thing to remember is to relax. Be open to new ideas and take the limits off of what you think your space should look like. Get creative and turn that apartment into the home of your dreams.

Healthy Pumpkin Bread Recipe & Gift Card Giveaway

In the fall, I enjoy baking and eating my favorite bread - pumpkin. I have adapted a traditional recipe to make it a bit healthier. Enjoy!

Healthy Pumpkin Bread Recipe

•2 cups of organic canned pumpkin
•1 cup of organic olive oil
•1 cup agave
•1 cup molasses
•4 organic eggs
•3 cups of organic whole wheat flour (or substitute with brown rice flour if you want gluten-free)
•1/2 cup ground flax seed
•1 teaspoon of baking soda
•1 teaspoon of salt
•1 teaspoon of cinnamon
•1 teaspoon of nutmeg
•1 teaspoon of allspice
•1/2 cup of chopped pecans for garnish

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together dry ingredients - flours, flax seed, salt and baking soda.

Mix pumpkin, eggs, oil, agave, molasses and spices. Combine wet and dry ingredients, mix thoroughly. Add some tablespoons of water if too thick.

Pour batter into a well-buttered 9-inch loaf pan. Sprinkle pecans on top. Bake 45-60 minutes or until center is firm and an inserted wooden pick comes out clean. Makes two loaves.
