Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay

You only have until September 6, 2010 to attend the exhibition, Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay at San Francisco's de Young Museum. The Musée d’Orsay of Paris is currently being renovated, giving us this rare opportunity to view nearly 100 magnificent works from the Impressionist masters.

On Friday, I had the pleasure of touring the impressive exhibition. It featured inspiring works by the famous masters who gathered in France during the mid- to late-19th century and jointly created the style, Impressionism. Notable masters showcased include Manet, Monet, Renoir and Sisley. {The Swing by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1876) show above}

Some of my favorite works were a selection of Degas’ paintings including The Dancing Lesson by Edgar Degas (1873–1876) shown above.

If you are able to attend, I would recommend selecting an early morning time slot {very crowded, but managed well}, purchasing the audio tour and enjoying the white bean veggie soup at the museum's cafe.

For tickets or more information regarding the exhibit, please visit de Young Museum.

  1. I saw this exhibition in Canberra, and while I enjoyed it, it felt dislocated, and there were gaps.
    Just have to go to the Musée d’Orsay...

  5. Funny story --- so we take our boys to Paris in June. We're at the Musee D'Orsay and ask them to select some postcards and then we would do a scavenger hunt through the museum. I thought I was so smart to get them engaged. So my youngest picks the picture of the little boy with the flute ---and it took us a while to realize....it was in San Francisco! So fun you got to see it!

  8. I love the Musee d'Orsay! I've been there a few times and it never fails to impress me. I went to the de Young museum for the first time last fall when I was out visiting my inlaws. I'll be out that way in September, but unfortunately not before this exhibit is over. Bummer!

  9. Thanks for the reminder Cristin. I so want to go, but not sure if I will make it before leaving for Europe. Perhaps you will do a full report if I can't go? :)

    Cheers,
