Will you be redesigning or decorating a child’s bedroom soon? The designing process can get a little overwhelming, but having a plan will save you time and money. More importantly the end result will be a space you and your child will love.
Today I am sharing tips on how to decorate a child’s bedroom at Polka Dot Peacock. It covers the process step by step including advice on color, lighting, furniture selection and of course storage. Here is tip number one:
Ask Your ChildWhen designing a bedroom for your child, it’s important to get his/her opinion first. Here are a few questions parents should ask their child before starting the decorating:
1. Describe your dream bedroom.
2. What do you like about your current bedroom?
3. would you change about your current bedroom?
4. What are you favorite colors?
Of course, not all of their ideas may be practical or fit in the budget, but this exercise helps make the child feel involved in the process. From their answers you will be able to pick up on colors and themes (i.e. trucks, butterflies, dinosaurs} that will help inspire the room’s look and feel.

ReplyDeleteThe best tip that I have to share is that babies grow so fast, so think of the best design for the long run. I always think that kids love looking back at things that can grow with them. Items like piggy banks, book ends and toys that can be saved for future generations are fun. My husband was recently given a photo album of himself as a baby and from his nursery.

I just redesigned my daughter's bedroom. She's a toddler, but I would hold up two different colors of spray paint and ask her..."pink or blue"...she narrowed down my color choices and I know that even though she's barely 3, she likes her room ;) Stop by my blog and you can see the redesign!
ReplyDeleteCristin,
ReplyDeleteChildren's room designs are, fun, loving and carries such positive energy as well as promise. Some of my favorite projects have been wee-one rooms. Space is utilized in the most efficient ways and I refer clients to look at children's rooms when they are seeking small space solutions.

I'm actually working on my daughters room right now!!!
ReplyDeleteWas just looking at the new Serena and Lily catalog today - such great things! Wish they had been around when I was starting out!
ReplyDeleteI've tried to do classic bedding that can grow with them - but underneath the sheets are fun! My 6 year old is demanding new art for his room....so I'm on the hunt!
i love the first picture! i wouldn't mind that being my room now :)
ReplyDeleteI also like giving a child the choice of four fabrics, or four pieces of artwork to choose from. That gives them a greater sense of ownership for the overall decor chosen for the room.
ReplyDeletecristin... great post! ( that last piece is MY design!... i license to oopsy dasiy!
ReplyDeletei really enjoy your blog - nice work! please check out my website www.drooz.com and blog - www.droozdoodles.com.
