Eco-friendly Woodland Birthday Party Supplies & Acme Discount

There is something so special and innocent about this delightful woodland themed birthday party by Acme Party Box Company. Perhaps it's because there are no mass marketed cartoon characters? {sorry Mickey!} When I found out it was eco-friendly too, I loved it even more.

Based here in the San Francisco Bay Area, Acme Party Box Company was born out of the desire to create unique parties for loved ones while while honoring both guests and the environment.

Acme Party Box comes with custom designed letterpress invitations are printed with soy based ink on 100% recycled paper and include coordinating envelopes made from post consumer recycled paper.

Designed to be used again and again, the party kit also includes washable 100% cotton fabric table linens and decorations designed and manufactured in San Francisco. The biodegradable tableware and beeswax candles are made from renewable materials with sustainable practices.

Guest Blogger: Joshua Zerkel With 5 Tips for Easy Cable Management

Today, I am thrilled to have Joshua Zerkel of Custom Living Solutions guest blogging. Based here in San Francisco, Zerkel is a professional organizer and productivity expert. He has cracked the code on cable management {a problem most of us have in our home and offices!} and am excited to have him share some of his techniques with us.

This is Joshua Zerkel from Custom Living Solutions. In addition to the work I do with clients helping them get more organized and boost their productivity by managing their paper, space, and time, I specialize in helping clients integrate technology into their work and into their lives. I’m pretty geeky, so sharing how to best use technology is really fun for me. Part of working with technology means finding ways to deal with the array of cables that seem to multiply with each new device we get. I’ve spent many hours under desks and behind cabinets trying to make it seem like the cables are barely there. Here’s how I do it:

Reduce – The vast majority of clients that I work with have way, way more cables than they need. There’s a sort of “cable entropy” that happens for most of us. We get a computer and some peripherals, the cables go behind the desk, and when we get new devices or gizmos to replace our old ones, many of us leave the old cables behind or just let them drop behind the desk. This can lead to a giant cable tangle. Sorting out this tangle, and determining exactly which cables are needed, is the first step in cable management. Make sure you have all of your devices hooked up properly, and then responsibly dispose of the unneeded cables at your local e-waste recycler.

Go wireless – Lots of devices, from computers to speakers, can now live with fewer wires thanks to technology like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Fewer wires equals less clutter! If your computer or peripherals can work wirelessly, you may be able to significantly reduce the amount of cables you have to manage. If you’re replacing an older device, it’s worth it to spend the extra money to get one that has a wireless option. And if you can’t go wireless, consider purchasing shorter cables to reduce the slack you’ll have to manage.

Label – For any cables or wires that you are keeping, it’s definitely worth it to pull out your labelmaker and clearly label your cables. Instead of trying to figure out the mystery of a group of all-black, similarly shaped cables, clearly labeling makes it so much easier when you need to unplug and then re-plug your gizmos. I recommend labeling your cables at BOTH ends with the name of the device that the cable is connected to.

Group – Once you’ve reduced your cables to the ones you actually need and use, then it’s time to start gathering them together. I prefer to create two groups - the power cables, and then the other cables (audio, video, USB, etc.). Once the cables are grouped, then it’s time to get some cable ties and wrap the cords so they don’t become separated. Make sure to leave enough slack so that you can still access your various components easily.

Hide - The final step in cable management is to hide the cables as much as you can. There are plenty of tools can help with this, from cable sheaths which you can put groups of cables into, to cable boxes which help to hide power adapters, extra cable slack, and power strips. A technique I like to use as much as I can is to route cables down the rear legs of a desk or table, and to tie them in place where they won’t be noticed. This is how I’ve made cables “disappear” for many of my clients.

Cable management is definitely an art, and it takes some careful planning and ingenuity to make sure that you manage and hide the cables as much as you can.

Guest Blogger: Emily A. Clark & Chic Girl's Bedroom

I am thrilled to have Emily A. Clark as a guest blogger today. She has a wonderful sense of style and has created the most beautiful, playful little girl's bedroom. I am so glad she agreed to give you a tour today. Thanks Emily!

Cristin did a fabulous guest post on my blog earlier this month and I'm happy to be able to return the favor today.

When we moved into our home a year and a half ago, one of my first projects was to create a "big girl room" for my then three-year-old daughter.  My goal: to create a fun girl's bedroom without using pink.  My daughter had other ideas.  You see who won. . . .

I fell in love with this green damask fabric for the bedding and painted all of the walls a pale yellow.  When the one hot pink pillow didn't suffice, I had the idea to make the polka dot pattern bigger than life on the wall behind the bed.

I used 13" circle wall decals (and did lots of tedious measuring!) to create the dots and had the hot pink paint mixed by matching it to the pillow.  My finishing touches included a mirror that I picked up at a local hotel surplus outlet for $20 and also painted the same shade of pink.

I found this small chair on Craigslist, painted it black and recovered the seat to match the window treatment:

More small touches of pink and some favorite framed photos of her:

The finished room--until she decides she doesn't like pink anymore. . . .

You can see more of my home and my adventures in decorating it on my blog.  Cristin, thanks again for asking me guest post for you!

Bone Inlaid Furniture and Decor

Bone inlaid furnishings. They are exotic, elegant and can be pricey {very labor intensive}. According to Wikipedia
"Inlay is a decorative technique of inserting pieces of contrasting, often coloured materials into depressions in a base object to form patterns or pictures that normally are flush with the matrix. Inlay in wood furniture differs from marquetry, a similar technique that largely replaced it in high-style European furniture during the 17th century, in that marquetry is an assembly of veneers applied over the entire surface of an object, whereas inlay consists of small pieces inserted on the bed of cut spaces in the base material, of which most remains visible."
Popular for centuries, intricate bone inlaid furniture and decor accents can been found in the world's finest homes and museums. Today bone inlay items are being incorporated in a variety of interior settings. They look marvelous just about anywhere , but especially  when mixed with period styles, contemporary or urban chic design elements.

Designer Windsor Smith, featured this dramatic, bone inlay buffet by Habité in the master bedroom in The Great House at the Greystone Estate {Veranda Magazine}. The opulent design seamlessly integrates Eastern, Indian and African elements.

Nathan Thomas, designer and Bravo TV's Top Design Season 2 winner, placed striking black and bone inlay ram's head chairs in both contemporary and traditional settings {images via ElleDecor}. Graham and Green carries a very similar chair.

Los Angeles-based interior designer, Ryan Brown of Brown Design uses a dramatic black and bone inlaid mirror in this eclectic foyer.

This traditional style stool is one of my favorites and would be perfect in a bath, living room or a pair at the foot of a bed. Handmade in India, this black and bone inlaid  Regency Stool by Graham and Green features a sweet floral motif. The intricate bone pattern was achieved by individually carving pieces of reliably sourced camel bone and affixing them into a resin.

This elegant inlaid bone tray from Wisteria would be a beautiful accent on a console, ottoman or dining room table.

This magnificent handmade bone inlay two drawer chest by Niki Jones would make a design statement in any space. All the bone used in Niki Jones' furniture is camel bone, procured from reliable sources and given a wildlife certificate from the Indian government prior to shipping.

This gorgeous Moorish bone inlaid and stained Savonarola Chair from the late 19th - early 20th century is available at Christie's for $4,576. The decorative bone inlay on the back, seat and X-frame is exquisite.

Now I am kicking myself for passing up a vintage Egyptian bone inlaid game table that was for sale at a nearby consignment shop for $650!
What do you think? Would you incorporate bone inlaid furniture into your home's interior design?

Hooray, Hooray! It's Nate Berkus Day!

Today in addition to honoring our nation’s flag, design bloggers are celebrating cutie-pie interior designer, Nate Berkus. Known for being one of the nicest decorators in the business, Nate’s career sky-rocketed in 2002 when he first appeared on the Oprah Show {love this show, will miss it dearly}.

Nate’s charm was contagious. We all wanted him to come over for a cup of tea and help us pick out fabrics at the kitchen table {and yes, Nate you are welcome any time!}. Over the past eight years, we religiously tuned in to see 127 stunning makeovers that made us smile, laugh and even cry. I secretly wanted him to knock on my door one day… and I still continue to fluff pillows, fold towels and tidy up the house just in case.

Nate has also provided wonderful decorating advice on Oprah.com. His Ten Easy Tweaks to Update Your Home is terrific and this one is my favorite:
5. Edit, edit, edit. I jam-pack my rooms with all kinds of found objects and accessories—but then I step back and put a few items away. Paring down is what makes a good room great.

On March 25, 2010, Oprah aired "Nate’s Grand Finale" and thanked Nate for inspiring viewers for eight years. "We brought him here because of his incredible eye for style, and we grew to love him for his big ole heart," Oprah says. "He taught millions of us to love the way we live."

But wipe those tears people! Oprah also announced that Nate’s headed to New York City to launch his own talk show, The Nate Berkus Show. Nate's show will debut September 13, 2010 {can’t wait!}. Will you tune in?

{my favorites from the Nate Berkus Collection at HSN}

Need more Nate love? The hilarious blogging duo at Moggit, Joy & Janet  and ultra-talented Julieann at CreateGirl helped plan this “Nate Day” blog party... jump here to read more!

Congrats Nate and Much Success in the Big Apple!!!

A Recent Look at the Alameda Point Antiques & Collectibles Faire

You know I can't pass up a good estate or yard sale. So when a friend asked if I would like to wake-up at the crack of dawn to go to "the point," I jumped at the chance. The Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire is Northern California's largest antiques and collectibles show and showcases 800+ outdoor dealers selling their goods on the first Sunday of every month at the former Alameda Point Naval Air Station in Alameda, California. Everything  for sale must be over twenty years old. Most keep to this rule, but I did find some interesting items {i.e. Old Navy t-shirt} that I wouldn't qualify as "vintage", but what the heck.

I brought my little Canon along to take some pictures. The thick fog helped in the early hours, but as soon as the sun broke through, the images were too washed out. So, here are the  photos  that turned out with some of the items that caught my eye...

Aren't these root balls amazing {pic above}? I would love to figure out how to do this. May be Kate or Janell will figure it out and post about it.

I didn't go home empty handed {put a little dent in the wallet!} and will share some of the treasures in a future post. Do you shop flea markets?
